With just under 100 days to go until the launch of the Green Finance Institute (2nd July) and registration for the event now open, London has once more been ranked top for the quality of its green finance offering by Z/Yen’s Global Green Finance Index, released today (Wednesday 27th March).
The result once again underlines London’s place as the world’s most innovative and committed green finance centre – outperforming all other global financial hubs in the ranking.
The launch of the Green Finance Institute – jointly funded by the UK Government – will take place on 2nd July during the Green Finance Summit, and will be the latest step that the City of London Corporation takes to accelerate and develop expertise in the field.
This will also coincide with the first ever London Climate Action Week (1st-8th July), organised by the Mayor of London.
Headline speakers at the Summit already confirmed include Rt Hon Claire Perry MP, Minister of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Growth and Hoesung Lee, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The Institute will bring together the UK’s existing capabilities to create new business opportunities and communicate London’s offer in green finance and insurance to the world.
$90tn of green finance will be needed by 2030 to take the drastic action needed to achieve global sustainable development and climate objectives. This presents an area of massive growth in the financial services industry – annual global investment in green energy reached $335.5bn in 2017, a rise of 714% since 2004.
Registration for the Green Finance Summit is now live at www.greenfinancesummit.org.
Sir Roger Gifford, Green Finance Initiative:
“We at the Green Finance Initiative welcome London’s position in the latest Global Green Finance Index. As the launch of the Green Finance Institute on July 2nd draws closer, it points to the UK’s position as a key international financial hub for the green finance sector.
“We also know there is no time for complacency and much to do to bring investors and bankers, issuers and underwriters to new levels of engagement. The global opportunities for green investment are rapidly increasing and London’s deep pools of liquidity and diversity of expertise make it a natural choice for financing these initiatives.
“The launch of the Institute will allow us to move to the next level, acting as a focal point for the UK Government, financial services stakeholders and climate scientists to influence the next stage of the industry’s evolution. This is a great opportunity for all financial services to promote climate risk management and find commercial opportunity in doing so.”
Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, Shirley Rodrigues:
“It is excellent news that London continues to be the best international centre for green finance and business innovation. To help mitigate climate change we must continue funding low carbon, green projects that are both good for our planet and our economy. This summer we will help launch the Green Finance Institute to help boost sustainable businesses during our London Climate Action Week and encourage every sector to help generate climate solutions.”
